It is believed that humankind has surfed the roiling waves of the ocean since 400 A.D. in ancient Peru. Centuries later, surfing made it to the Olympic games, and since then has been a fan favorite to watch. The Paris 2024 Olympics are near, and the surfers will have to qualify for the Games at the ISA World Surfing Games 2023.

All surfers have to prove their mettle and defeat their counterparts to become the worldwide best, in order to confirm their place at the Olympics. This requires immense skill on their part. However, a video recently shared by the official Instagram page of the Olympics shows a skill that even Olympic-level surfers might not possess.

The most peculiar trick caught on camera

Time and again, clips have gone viral on the internet, which showcase some astonishing surfing tricks. Surfers have gotten famous for performing stunts while surfing, eating full-course meals on the surfboard, and even riding the waves while wearing heels. Similarly, this Instagram reel shows a surfer using his surfboard as a mini boat while conquering the sea waves.

In the video, the man is seen sitting on the surfboard, in a chair, that is perfectly balanced so that it almost seems like he is sitting in his backyard. With a rowing paddle in his hands, the unidentified surfer crosses his legs and maneuvers through the waves using his paddle in order to avoid falling into the water.  The surfer proceeds to ride the cresting wave perfectly, all the while sitting on the chair.

However, as the whitewash rolls in, the surfer is knocked off the surfboard along with his chair in what seems to be a perfectly orchestrated disembark. While the ISA World Surfing Games 2023 will witness surfers from all across the world proving their prowess in surfing, this is an ability that probably none of them will exhibit.

Surfing at the Olympics

Surfing made its debut at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with a men’s and a women’s category, each of which featured 20 athletes. As is the norm in international surfing competitions, the athletes used shortboards to compete at the Games. The first Olympic champion in surfing was Brazil’s Italo Ferreira, who defeated the Japanese surfer Kanoa Igarashi to take home the Gold medal.

In the women’s category, the Hawaiin Carissa Moore won the Gold after defeating South Africa’s Bianca Buitendag. American, Australian, and Brazilian surfers have dominated surfing at the Olympics since its inception in the Games. This year, eight surfers, four men and four women will qualify for the Olympics from the ISA World Surfing Games 2023.
