The sport of surfing has seen a diversity of paddlers and sea pursuers who enjoy chasing waves. The surfing realm has not only witnessed humans as pro surfers, but the ocean is no stranger to other terrestrial animals like dogs and cats, who also enjoy pursuing their passion for surfing. Adhering to this trend, an Orlando-based former professional wakeboarder, Nick Heaney has been giving surf lessons to his cat, Maverick, for a few years now. Under Heaney’s staunch training, Maverick is now making waves within the surfing community through his incredible surfing prowess.

Maverick is a five-year-old Bengal cat, who can often be seen catching waves or just hanging out at the beach with his owners Nick Heaney and Kayla Tabish. More so, Maverick’s love for the water first sparked when he was just a kitten. Since then, he has been unstoppable. Nevertheless, it was Heaney and his partner Tabish who trained Maverick into becoming a superstar surfer.

Nick Heaney’s surfing cat astounds the surfing fraternity with his wave-chasing and paddle-boarding skills

Heaney and his partmer Tabish recently appeared in an interview with FOX 35 Orlando, where they chatted about the surfing ingenuity of their pet Maverick. While talking about his own passion for surfing, Heaney stated, “It’s a feeling and I’m drawn to it. Whether it’s you know, wakeboarding or surfing”. Interestingly, the Bengal cat is versed in surfing on a kayak and a paddleboard.

Expressing her elation for their pet’s paddling skills, Tabish asserted, “Maverick is just like so special to us. We don’t have children so we’re kind of that new-age people where your pets are your kids. So, I’d say he pretty much means like the world to us”. Moreover, while teaching Maverick surf lessons, the couple also took into their consideration the safety and protection of Maverick from various unforeseen dangers.

Heaney and Tabish created a special harness for walks, and a special SurferCat life jacket to assure Maverick’s safety in the water. Nonetheless, Maverick’s exemplary surfing adroitness caught the media’s attention and he has been featured in a Netflix documentary called ‘Cat People’, several magazines, and a series of news articles. More so, Maverick has his own Instagram handle called ‘Maverick the Surfing Cat’ with 100k followers. Clearly, with his extraordinary flair for surfing, Maverick has made a haven in the hearts of millions.
