Kelly Slater is certainly the demigod of waves. Apart from ruling the waves, the 50-year-old is also well-versed in accounting for each second while surfing. However, the surfer’s time-reckoning habit got induced by his bizarre childhood activity.

Earlier this year, Kelly Slater talked about the importance of accounting time while surfing. He also got candid about the childhood habit that led him to develop a point of always logging his surfing time.

Kelly Slater reminisced a habit from his childhood

A couple of months back, Slater collaborated with Breitling watches and launched a watch that helps surfers keep track of their time. Slater’s merger got him an interview with GQ magazine. The host asked Slater about the first time he wore a watch in the water, to which the surfer recalled a rather interesting anecdote from his childhood.

As per the report, Slater used to wear a watch to school as a kid. His watch had a video game and a computer, which fascinated Slater as a child. “I thought it was so cool, and there was a computer on it too, so it was almost like I could cheat in my maths class”, reminisced the 50-year-old.

Moreover, Slater mentioned the reason he started wearing the watch in the water. He said, “for the water, by the time I was about 10 I started to wear a watch because of competition. We’d time our heats, 15, 20, 25, or 30 minutes in the water so I got used to wearing a watch as a young kid”.
