Laird Hamilton is one of the most decorated surfers of all time. He has conquered all gigantic waves across the globe. However, the 58-year-old legend had survived some nearly fatal accidents.

In a 2018 interview with Graham Bensinger, Laird Hamilton opened up about the dangerous side of surfing on huge waves. He described five near-death incidents from his career.

Graham asked Laird about his closest call to death. But Laird had a list prepared in his head. There were many instances when Hamilton thought that he won’t survive. “I have a lot of chances to die for sure” he joked.

Laird started with the incident of him getting lost in the midst of the sea. He further described the time when he fell on a cornice. “I have fallen on a cornice of a giant glacier in Russia,” he added.

The ‘Waterman’ was once bashed on a rock under the waterfall to the bottom in Oregon. He was also thrown off the water by a gigantic wave. He admitted to having a long history of accidents. Laird said, “I have a good relationship with being on the spot where you feel like this is it.

The deadliest wipeout in Hamilton’s career

Graham later asked him about the worst wipeout he faced. Laird told him he came across two deadliest wipeouts in life. Hamilton said, “I’ve had a couple of big ones”.

The veteran surfer described that once he got pushed so deep inside the ocean that he couldn’t even see the sunlight. He described, “I was pushed into the black at the bottom of the ocean.” The high-intensity wave chopped off his lips and gave him serious injuries.
