Kelly Slater is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to environmentalism. From being vocal about the ocean’s health to being a connoisseur of aquatic sustainability, the surfing legend has covered it all. However, the champion once has to face criticism for voicing his opinion on a major environmental issue. Nevertheless, the surfer recanted his statement and apologized for his words.

In 2017, the Reunion Island in France was facing an increasing number of fatal accidents caused by predatory bull sharks. In response to the ferocious shark attacks, Slater urged the authorities “to launch a major cull of sharks”. Upon posing his statement, Slater received hateful accusations and condemn from surfing fanatics. However, shortly after he stated his opinion on shark culling, he took back his words and thoroughly explained the reasons for addressing his initial statement.

Kelly Slater once pardoned for his statement

As per the report of Surf Europe Magazine, Kelly Slater penned a detailed message explaining his controversial statement on shark slaughtering. Slater wrote, “I would like to address my comment about the recent bull shark attack in Reunion Island. I did not think my words through”.

The surfer further asserted, “It is easy to get emotional given the recent history with sharks that the local community has suffered”. Moreover, the surfer addressed his belief in finding long-term solutions to a prevailing problem. “Killing anything in hopes of a solution is not in line with my philosophies,” added Slater.

Interestingly, many people from the surfing fraternity also supported Slater after he cleared the air around his shark culling statement. He then optimistically conceded to find a solution “that works for everyone”.

A solution backed by technology and human emotions

The 11x world surf league champion added, “This is a good time to put energy and intelligence into finding a solution”. Moreover, Slater asserted to find the solutions by “utilizing technology, science, and human emotions”. In conclusion of his message, Slater pledged to continue protecting oceans and their ecosystems.

Slater may have received accusations about his inadvertent statement, but he has taken some major initiatives to protect the world’s oceans. His Instagram speaks volumes when it comes to aquatic health. All in all, Slater is true to his beliefs in saving oceans and its ecosystem.
