As per the 2020 Vice report, a 60-year-old surfer, Nick Minogue was surfing on the Pauanui beach on North Island’s east coast. Minogue was a long way out from the shore when a great white shark latched onto the front of the surfboard. In response, the Auckland local punched the eye of the shark.

So I actually shouted at it ‘f**k off!’ and went to punch it in the eye”, recalled Minogue. However, he missed his first shot and again took another hit at the shark. The 60-year-old added, “Then I pulled my fist back and shouted ‘f**k off!’ again and got it right smack-bang in the eye”.

Interestingly, the hit on the eye made the shark ward off in the other direction. But, amidst his struggles of fighting with the shark, the New Zealander got wounded in the process. However, he safely reached the shore and expressed his heartfelt gratitude. “Thankfully it wasn’t too deep”, he said.
