Saving one animal won’t change the world, but it will change the world for that one animal. Staying true to this beautiful message, a group of brave Costa Rican surfers once showcased their moxie and saved a baby whale. Interestingly, the group handled the rescue operation without the help of sea guards or any other local authority.

In 2016, Mauricio Camareno, a Costa Rican surfer, went on a surfing trip with his friends to Boca Barranca beach on the Central Pacific coast. With their surfboards in tow, the group of surfers started paddling in the water. However, they suddenly came to a halt, as they noticed a black bump protruding from the surface of the sea. The bump emerging from the water belonged to a baby whale. To their surprise, the little mammal was crying as she got stuck in the middle of nowhere. Camareno and his surfing companions helped the baby reunite with the ocean’s depths where the whale originally belonged.

As per the report of Amelia Rueda (translated by the Costa Rica Star), in 2016, a baby whale got stuck in the mouth of a river in Puntarenas. However, Camareno and his companions spotted the mammal during their surfing spree and mentioned that “she was very weak and could not keep afloat”. Nonetheless, the surfing clan heard the whale crying out in distress as she pleaded for help.

Now comes the rescue operation. The Costa Rican samaritans let their kindness lead the way, in order to help the baby whale extricate from the constraints. For six straight hours, the men held and guided the whale to the safer part of the ocean. They waited for the high tides in order to safely guide the mammal back to the deeper part of the sea, where she can float easily. After several attempts, the surfing champions successfully paved the way for the baby to dive into the ocean.

More so, Camareno and his friends called the veterinarian and Costa Rica’s Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) for extra helping hands. But, their efforts went in vain, as neither agency followed up. The surfer conceded, “they told us that they had to follow a protocol to check if the whale had any disease”. Camareno further added, “MINAE said they would send (veterinarian) but during the whole time we were there no one ever arrived.” However, the surfers took the matter into their own hands.

Interestingly, the baby whale weighed around 130 pounds. Nonetheless, if the hefty weight of the small mammal is coupled with the slippery water lubrication, it becomes difficult to tow the whale by hand. However, the surfing heroes defied the complexities and went on to choose kindness over comfort.
