The deep blue oceanic veil carries many age-old stories in its embrace. One tale that the surfing community takes the honor to witness is the life of veteran surfer Pat Curren. The big-wave pioneer and legendary surfer, Pat Curren left the world for his heavenly abode on 22nd January 2023, leaving behind a void in the surfing community. Acclaimed as the best big-wave rider, Curren led his life as one of the most prominent surfers in history.
Following the demise of the big-wave demigod, the 11x WSL champion, Kelly Slater expressed his heartfelt tribute to honor the bequest of the veteran surfer.

Kelly Slater penned an earnest encomium for Pat Curren
On 26th January 2023, the Bud Browne Film Archives took to its Instagram handle to share a short glimpse of Curren’s life. In the caption, was penned a beautiful message describing the persona of the surfer. Nevertheless, a couple of hours ago, the surfing champion, Kelly Slater re-shared the reel on his Instagram story to pay his heartfelt homage.

Captioning the story, Slater penned, “Not sure if I posted about Pat Curren’s recent passing”. Expressing his eulogy the World Surf League champion further wrote, “A true legend and waterman who lived a long and full life”.

Voicing his honor for the memories that Curren contributed to the surfing fraternity, Slater added, “Glad to have known you!”.
Pat Curren: the best big-wave rider
Recognized as one of the most legendary big-wave surfers, Pat Curren made many heads turn his way during his prime. Curren caused a stir in the surfing fraternity as he trounced the giant swells of Waimea in 1957 in the most incredible fashion. Following this, the surfer became the embodiment of big wave surfing. He was even featured in first-generation surf movies like Surf Crazy (1959), Barefoot Adventure (1960), Cavalcade of Surf (1962), and Gun Ho (1963).

Patt Curren is the father of 3x world champion Tom Curren, who like his father performed some exceptional surfing prompts. While after spending 90 glorious years the legend left the world, his legacy will always be carried forward. In the words of Slater, Curren indeed was “a true legend”. Rest in Peace icon.
