Being surrounded by water is a challenge in itself for many. While surfers and swimmers may feel that they have conquered it all, it only takes a wave to knock them out. Amidst this, going underwater tells a different story altogether. For years, the Ironman triathlon has been testing the endurance of participants. It includes a segment where the participant travels underwater. Recently, legendary surfer Kelly Slater spoke about it in a documentary.

Kelly’s good friend Trevor Hendy is a 6x Australian Iron man champion. He is also a surf lifesaver. While the legend is one of the greatest surfers himself, he was in awe of Trevor’s talents. During a chat, Trevor revealed how he managed to walk underwater and what kept him going.

Kelly Slater and his best friend talk about going underwater

In his documentary series “Kelly Slater: Lost Tapes,” the surfer engaged in a conversation with his good friend and athlete Trevor Hendy. While they talked about going underwater, Kelly mentioned how easy it was for Trevor. The duo estimated the length of their practice area, which was 200 yards, and the surfer exclaimed how his friend had already covered the distance underwater.

Walking underwater requires a lot of strength. This is because water provides more resistance than air. While it helps build muscles, it also takes a lot of practice to be able to do it. Trevor shared his experience of performing an underwater walk.

The athlete agreed that the walk is not easy. Although, he shared a piece of useful advice for those who wanted to get started on it. Trevor recalled how it seemed difficult until he got down to do it. He explained, “that’s the difference…of just a magical realization that if you think it’s hard then it is”. That is how the athlete went on to conquer his fears.

Although the piece of advice was for underwater walking, it could apply to other situations as well. Kelly Slater seemed inspired by his friend. The duo appreciated the beauty of being underwater.

They agreed that the toughest part was holding their breath as they couldn’t find places to hide. Nevertheless, being underwater brought them joy.
