We often see many athletes credit their success to their parents. The 11-time World Surf League champion, Kelly Slater, is no exception. Though his way of showing respect to his mother is rather different. Kelly Slater expressed his regard by following the path of his mother’s teachings and never smoked a joint in his life. 

Kelly Slater is known for gracing the sport of surfing with some of the most commendable performances. He owes most of his achievements to his disciplined regime and drug-free life. A while back, the legendary surfer opened up about the real reasons for staying away from all kinds of highs.

Why Kelly Slater never smoked a Joint?

In a talk with Natural High, Slater unwrapped the reasoning behind leading a sober life. His mother used to tell him about the drinking habits of his grandfather and how they affected his grandfather’s life. “Grandfather drank a lot”, said his mother. 

She further explained to Slater the ill effects it can cause in one’s life. She asked him to look around and said, “I’ll be surprised if you ever see anyone who’s successful, who’s alcoholic, who does drugs. It just never lead anywhere good”. Slater’s mother further added, “Put your energy into what you love”.

Interestingly, there were many instances when Slater was seen spreading the message of leading a drug-free and alcoholic-free life. He even said, “I never even thought of smoking a joint or doing drugs growing up”. “It wasn’t my wheelhouse”, he added.

Slater’s relationship with his mother

While Slater has an estranged relationship with his father, he loves his mother dearly. The legend never shies away from showing his gratitude towards his mother. He often shows his admiration for her mother by posting on Instagram or talking highly of her in interviews. 

After his parents’ divorce, he sided with his mother. His father’s alcoholism was the principal cause of Slater’s parents’ separation. Thus, it is also one of the main reasons why Slater believes in sobriety.
