It takes dynamic strength and incredible endurance to become a skilled swimmer. But the physicality of an athlete can make a world of difference. Michael Phelps’ pursuit of his 28-strong medal tally was supported by his advantageous body structure.

Phelps is 6 feet 4 inches tall with a wingspan of a man 4 inches taller, at 6.66 feet. It’s no wonder he dwarfs most people standing next to him. With his three sons aged between 2 to 6, taking family pictures on special occasions can be challenging.

Phelps headlined the US Olympic Hall of Fame class of 2022. On 24th June, the committee held the induction ceremony in Colorado Springs, where Phelps shared some inspirational words. His 28 medals, 23 of which are gold, make him the most decorated Olympian ever.

His family; wife Nicole Johnson Phelps, and sons Boomer, Maverick, and Beckett, along with mother Debbie Phelps, showed up to support the champion. The pictures released from the day paint a heartwarming picture. The husband and wife posed with their three kids decked out in suits.

Michael Phelps’ legacy in the world of sports

In his long and enduring career, where he attended 5 different Olympics from 2000 to 2016, Michael Phelps dominated the sport for around two decades. He set 39 world records, his 400m individual medley record (4:03.84) still standing strong after 14 years. There is no doubt he is the greatest swimmer of all time.

But Phelps’ dominance in the pool isn’t his only legacy. Throughout his career, Phelps has endured a long battle with depression. He has spoken up about his struggles and become a mental health advocate. His charity, the Michael Phelps Foundation, lends support to fellow athletes.

“Where we are in the world. And as you heard from Mike, my biggest journey now is the mental health world,” Phelps said at the ceremony. “I struggle and I still struggle almost every single day. We need to give these athletes the support that they deserve and they need.”
