There are no doubts about how Michael Phelps became the best swimmer in the world. Dedication and determination helped him win multiple medals and set world records. However, God gave him extraordinary physical attributes that acted as a catalyst to his incredible success. The name wingspans are relevant in almost every Phelps article you find on the internet. But, let’s compare those gigantic wingspans to actual birds.

Often we see Usain Bolt compared to the fastest animals on earth. Wingspan means the distance between one tip to another tip. Greater wingspans assist a bird in receiving a better lift in the air. Similarly, Phelps used his wingspans to get an advantage for his butterfly strokes. Now, let’s compare the wingspans of various birds to Michael.

The mystery of the wandering albatross!

Looking into the wide variety of birds, the wandering albatross ranks high on the list. It has a massive wingspan of 3.7 meters, having the longest wingspan of any living bird on the planet. They cover the Southern Ocean three times and travel around 120,000 km in one year. The length of its body ranges from three to four feet. Phelps has a wingspan of 2.03 meters compared to the massive bird. There is a great deal of difference between the champion swimmer and the bird.

After the albatross, the Great White Pelican found in southeast Europe, Asia, and Africa holds an edge. It measures 3.6 meters and is prevalent in large numbers. There are various varieties of the Pelican and, like the albatross, ranks on top of the list. The Andean Condor found in Southern America has a wingspan of 3.2 meters. Michael Phelps is a fast swimmer

Although Phelps can boast a remarkable wingspan, it is just one of the physical attributes that help him win. He stands at 6’4″, and his enormous wingspan helps him swim faster than the rest. In amateur terms, his hands work as paddles while boating and working efficiently. He has a better torso, gaining a significant advantage while producing lesser lactic acid, which promotes endurance.
