Parenting can be hard, no doubt about that. Even the greatest swimmer of all time struggles at parenting at times. Michael Phelps has three kids, and let’s get it straight; he loves them. However, it can be exhausting, and even Phelps had to take some time away.

The swimmer adopted a different approach to raising his three beautiful boys, Boomer, Beckett, and Maverick. In a recent interview, he mentioned how he struggled with his mental health and even had to take timeouts to regain his energy back.
Michael Phelps’ hard time during parenting
Usually, when his emotions catch up with him, he workouts in the gym. Physical activity has been important to him and is an integral part of his life. Thus, when the emotions get better of him, he takes some time off by moving away until he catches hold of them. He explained the process of what he did during crunch times.

“I take time to myself, where I just go for five or 10 minutes, either into the office or into the bedroom. I just take peace and quiet. I regroup and I write some stuff down or do certain things to calm myself”, said Phelps.

He also talked about how his kids watch him struggle at times and provides tools for them to become emotionally strong. Three bubbling kids, Boomer is the oldest amongst the lot. He was three months old when Phelps swam at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Beckett Richard Phelps is his second son, while Maverick Nicolas Phelps is his third son. Hence, he loves to spend time with them and also explained one of his famous parenting tools.

Technique Phelps uses to cope with emotional stress
“Lion Roar” is a technique that involves taking a deep breath and roaring like a lion. This process helps a person lower his heart rate. It helps to regain one’s focus during times when one loses control over their emotions. Thus, the lion roar technique is Phelps’ way of coping with emotional stress.

After his legendary Olympics career, he is one of the most prominent advocates when it comes to speaking about mental health struggles and how to cope with them. Hence, this is the latest chapter from his playbook of dealing with emotions.
