22-Year-Old Causes Major Upset to World Record Holder Caeleb Dressel Ahead of Team Trials

The 2022 Pro Swim Series in San Antonio saw one of the most shocking performances of the season. Claiming second place at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Westmont, Shaine Casas caused a major upset. Putting on an incredible performance, the sensational 22-year-old defeated the world record holder of the 100-meter butterfly event, Caeleb Dressel.

Dressel started in lane two as he came up short during the competition. A backstroke specialist, Casas announced his arrival to the swimming fraternity, winning the event with a fantastic swim.

Casas shocks Caeleb Dressel

Casas qualified as the top seed for the competition. He set a time of 51.09 to defeat the Olympic gold medalist and world record holder. In the meantime, Dressel finished second by posting a time of 51.79. The third place went to Coleman Stewart, who had a time of 51.93.

The first split for Casas was clocked at 23.75. He followed that momentum and finished the race perfectly. An able backstroke swimmer, he is now displaying his talents in various swimming disciplines. After the race, he reflected upon his performance.

“I think it’s a pretty rhythm-based stroke. I felt a little off on that but I think it was solid and I’m kind of learning every single race. So, I’m just building that,” said Casas.

He spoke about Dressel and Coleman, who competed with him in the race and was aware of what the two superstars could do. Most certainly, has all it takes to win medals at this year’s FINA World Championships.

Can Dressel bounce back?

Caeleb did showcase a bit of rustiness, but the fact remains that he is one of the best swimmers in the world. At the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, he won five gold medals and created a world record in the 100-meters butterfly competition. He set a time of 49.45 in the event and dominated the competition.

Physically, he is in the best shape right now. Given his talent and potential, he remains the favorite heading to the 2022 Swimming World Championships. Undoubtedly, fans can expect him to bounce back from this loss and put his best foot forward in future events.
