On Sunday 23rd July, the Diamond League returned to London Stadium as part of the Wanda Diamond League. And the American athlete, who specializes in 100 and 200 meters, made history by breaking the sprinting legend Usain Bolt’s record. The 26-year-old American Track and Field sprinter, Noah Lyles executed such a charismatic performance that world record fell behind him.

The 2023 Diamond League Season commenced on a great note and has seen a multitude of track stars clinching accolades. Along with the other athletes, Lyles also showed off his incredible skills and then celebrated his win with a famous anime reference. 

Noah Lyles breaks Usain Bolt’s record

Noah Lyles finally broke his tie with the Jamaican athlete, Usain Bolt, for most wins under 20 seconds races. Bolt has 34 wins under 20 seconds and Noah won the London Diamond League with 19.47 seconds and marked his 35th victory under 20 seconds. Noah celebrated this by posing as the famous fictional anime character Saturo Gojo. Gojo depicts the immeasurable cursed energy in Jujutsu Kaisen, just like what Lyles showed in the Diamond League. 

Lyles also posted this picture on his Instagram Story collaged with Gojo’s picture of the famous finger gesture. Lyles’s record of 19.47 also became the 10th-best time in the history of the Diamond League. Lyles told the BBC after his race, “I said it was going to be fast. I told Zharnel he could easily break that British record and he smashed it.” He added, “The 200 will always be mine. She’s my wife.” According to NBC, Lyles can join Allyson Felix and Usain Bolt next month to win three consecutive 200 meters wins. In the same race, Zharnel Hughes and Letsile Tebogo also created some incredible records.

Hughes and Tebogo showing off their strength in the Diamond League

Letsile Tebogo, a Botswana sprinter, secured the second position with the timing of 19.50. He also broke the old African record and made the third fastest time of his career. And Zharnel Hughes, the Anguilla-born British sprinter, secured the third position with 19.73 timing. Last month he was also known as the fastest man in the world for his performance of 9.83 seconds in 100 meters in the New York City Grand Prix. Zharnel expressed his elation and stated, “I did it again. I predicted it,” he added, “. I did not care about winning, as long as I execute the time that my coach wanted and the British record.”

This London Diamond League was nothing less than a treat for the spectators to watch more than one record-breaking performance in a single match. 26 years old Noah Lyles says he will be returning to the USA and then a relay camp before going to Budapest next month.
