Out of all the sports competitions in the world, track and field are probably one of the oldest. However, the income that these athletes receive is a tough watch. Only the top 10 ranked athletes get at least a decent wage for their efforts. Not only that, the top five athletes go further ahead to search for sponsors and grants. Hence, it is a tough world. This has come to the notice of everyone as Aaron Brown spoke about differences in pay between track and field athletes when compared to NFL athletes.

He brought to notice how athletes from other sports get paid more while benefits are not given to athletes. This made Brown pen an emotional plea for increasing wages for athletes.

A big disparity in track and field and NFL income

Brown spoke about the NFL combines getting more attention than the track and field events. With athletes ditching track for NFL, Brown explained how even the mid-tier sprinters can shine in the NFL with speed being a factor. Now, this has a detrimental effect on the track and field community. With NFL offering multi-million paychecks, most sprinters are switching to football so that they can receive better paychecks. Brown mentioned:

“Mid-tier sprinters can stave off the fastest the NFL has to offer in terms of raw speed. That should be worth something.”

This is a cause of concern for many because track and field athletes receive very low income from their sport. Brown talked about how tough it is to earn wages in the track and field events. As the NFL is huge all over the USA, Brown talked about even average sprinters earning more than a world-class sprinter. He stressed how TV deals help the NFL with round-the-clock coverage while there is no such exposure for track and field athletes.

Likewise, in the sport of F1, the Netflix documentary ‘Drive to Survive’ has gained a lot of new fans, as the viewership for motor racing is at an all-time high. Thus, having a special show can help. He focused on an athlete’s hardships, making more interest rather than a champion’s tale.

A change in the system

So, what can be done to improve these parameters? Brown suggested a new format that can help everyone in the world. Rankings make a difference. He wants vigorous ranking systems that can attract attention while also suggesting head-to-head matchups. Every sport focuses on rivalries as their sub-plot to hype up these matches. With new athletes in town, better coverage can help people to step back and take notice.

Brown won two Olympic medals in his career. Despite that, he opened up about his struggles despite being a world-class sprinter. When a mid-level college football athlete gets paid millions for his skill set, the world-class sprinters on the track and field chase for higher wages and income. Brown’s points can help the track and field community to adopt new practices to help the athletes.
