Alejandra Gálvez and Daniela Sierra are 31 years apart, thus making their participation in the 1,500-meter run an impressive one. At fifteen, Daniela participated in her first national championships and, post-run told Athletics Weekly that it was “a surprise and a huge motivation.” The mother-daughter placed 10th and 12th, with timings of 4:38.59 and 4:49.85, respectively, leaving them inches away from finals qualification.

With a run of 2:12.99 last year, Gálvez—the oldest competitor in the championships—broke the W45 world indoor 800-meter record. According to the Cueva de Nerja Club, Alejandra qualified for the 800 meters and Daniela for the 1500 meters. However, the mother took the unexpected chance for the 1500m sprint, which seemed too good to refuse, making them take up the challenge.

Interestingly, Alejandra had lost to Daniela at the Andalusian regional championships, but the positions were reversed at the nationals. “She [Daniela] is still ahead of me because we’ve had three 1500m races, and it’s 2-1 to her,” Alejandra joked. Both athletes are preparing for a new outdoor challenge in the near future, hoping to achieve the requirements for their respective categories’ outdoor championships.
