Jackie Chan began working in movies as a stuntman in the late 60s. In the 70s, the martial arts master began to play leading roles in Hong Kong films. However, Chan’s rise continued when he became a global superstar after starring in Hollywood movies. However, the film star’s growing fame and wealth also attracted swindlers. While Jackie Chan did suffer at the hands of such strangers, he never expected one of his close friends to con him out of millions of dollars.

The honorary Oscar winner published his autobiography Never Grow Up in 2018. In the book, the pioneer of action-comedy cinema wrote about his journey from almost giving up acting to owning a fleet of luxury cars. However, Chan also recounted the mishaps he faced along the way.

The man who sacrificed his friendship for greed 

In his book, the martial arts master spoke about a friend he had known for over a decade. The man worked for the Japanese car manufacturer Mitsubishi. Though Chan, “started hearing from other people that this guy had problems”, he trusted his friend and gave him $500,000 to refurbish a Classic Rolls-Royce Chan owned. “Nothing happened for two years,” and the boxes the man delivered didn’t have Rolls-Royce parts in them.

When Chan confronted the man, he told the actor not to worry. Instead, he brought up the offer Bentley had made to Jackie Chan. According to Chan, the Bentley offered to swap out his four-door model for a special Jackie Chan edition two-door model. Chan trusted his friend again and told him to make the trade on his behalf.

“A little over a year later, my special-order Bentley arrived. They drove it to my house and asked me to pay $3.2 million!” wrote the Oscar winner in his autobiography. When Chan told Bentley he had already paid them $2.5 million through his friend, they said, “Er, nobody’s given us anything.”

Jackie Chan Saved $8 Million Just by Making One Small Life Change

“I kept investigating and found out that he’d sold the car to someone for $2.8 million, $300,000 more than he told me.”, wrote Chan. Indeed fame is a double-edged sword. However, in his book, Chan wrote about fraudsters who swindled him of even more significant sums of money.

The only swindler Jackie Chan went after

“One time, someone cheated me out of $40 million.” Chan wrote. He blames himself for falling for such scams. “I barely knew the guy, but he told me he’d invest my money and earn big profits. I believed in him and got scammed. I should have known better.”, says Chan.

However, when it comes to his close friend swindling him, Chan revealed that he “considered the Bentley swindler to be like a brother.” Chan in turn wanted to teach his former friend a lesson. A furious Jackie Chan then sued the man, and ultimately bankrupted him.
