Mikaela Shiffrin might’ve entered the Winter Olympics with the hope of winning several medals. However, she was left heartbroken after crashing out of both her main events early in the Games.

Understandably, Shiffrin was demotivated and frustrated. This was not how she imagined her Olympic campaign. Hence, she knew she had to pull off something different to leave her mark at the Winter Olympics.

Mikaela then picked herself up and put on back-to-back impressive performances at the following events. But even though she gave it her all, it simply wasn’t meant to be as she lost her last chance of a solo Gold Medal on Thursday.

Shiffrin misses out on last solo Gold Medal chance

The Womens’ Alpine Combined Downhill event was held on 17th January, Thursday. As Mikaela Shiffrin was one of the first to go, the US star alpine skier did quite well for herself.

In the first round, it was Shiffrin who ruled the scoreboard for quite some time. With a timing of 1:32:98, Mikaela finished in 5th position at the end of the first round.

But the 2nd round proved unlucky for her. Mikaela received yet another “Did not Finish” (DNF) in the 2nd round. This was her last chance at a Solo Olympic gold medal, and Mikaela lost it.

Had she been consistent with her performance, she had a pretty good chance at a podium finish, if not gold. Fans were looking forward to Mikaela Shiffrin, clinching on to their last bits of hope.

With most competitions done and dusted, Mikaela has only one last event ahead of her. But that will be a Team event. There is no chance that Mikaela can grab a solo Gold Medal now.

As Shiffrin bowed out of her last individual event, it was heartbreaking to see the champion skier down, who came into the Olympics as the defending champion. However, given the fighter she is, she will certainly walk away with her head held high and a dozen positives to carry forward.

Shiffrin, who was the Gold Medal prospect for the US, and probably the most looked forward to the alpine skier, will now have to wait another 4 years for the next Winter Olympics. Before she leaves Beijing, she will last be seen in the Mixed Team Parallel Slalom Competition.
