Days After 12 Horse Fatalities Rocked Equestrian Community, Massive Step Announced for the Future

The Kentucky Derby has been held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, for the last 149 years. However, there was plenty of thrill before, during, and after this year’s Derby. The controversy sprang from both the withdrawal of pre-race favorite Forte and legitimate worries for the safety of the horses on the racetrack. Equestrian enthusiasts voiced their alarm as the number of deceased racehorses grew closer to the Kentucky Derby.
The authorities have reportedly called for an emergency session to discuss the incidents at Churchill Downs, as reported by the Associated Press on their social media channels and website. The track and other areas of the purported site would be investigated by separate teams.

The killing of these defenseless animals was already a hotly contested topic among equestrians. Churchill Downs’ assured that the track was safe for equestrian competitions after the Kentucky Derby, and yet, 12 horses have since been fatally injured there.
On Tuesday, representatives from Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Racing Commission, and the HISA veterinary staff will gather for a summit. On Monday, the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) stated that it will send track superintendent Dennis Moore for another independent evaluation of the facilities and training methods. Additional veterinary expertise and horse control will be provided at the Derby’s home track by HISA equine safety and welfare director Jennifer Durenberger.

HISA confirmed that the evaluation will start following Tuesday’s conference. After receiving the summit’s findings, Churchill Downs will host CEO Lisa Lazarus and track safety director Ann McGovern, who will provide more ideas for the venue’s future.
