“Too Much Money”: Islanders General Manager Gives a Blunt Assessment of the Deal With Bo Horvat

Bo Horvat, the ex-captain of the Vancouver Canucks, was recently traded to the New York Islanders and has since been a major talking point in the NHL. Horvat’s contract with the Islanders was extended to eight years for an enormous $8.5 million. On the other hand, Lou Lamoriello, the Islanders’ President of Hockey Operations and General Manager, has a different take.
Next Man Up, a YouTube channel, posted a video of Lou Lamoriello commenting on the new contract Bo Horvat received. The GM candidly talks to the press about the deal, suggesting his displeasure with it.

On January 30th, Bo Horvat’s trade to the Islanders was finalized. Both, the players of the New York Islanders and the Vancouver Canucks, and even Horvat himself had no idea the deal was happening until it happened. All of this occurred so suddenly, that it left the community with many questions for the teams and Horvat as well. Although the recent contract agreement was a major step in his NHL career, the former Canucks captain is still learning his way around the Islanders.

Lou Lamoriello dislikes it when people ask for information about his deals. But it seems he has no problem telling people what he thinks about them. In the interview, as seen in the Youtube video, Lamoriello says, “All I can tell is it’s too long and it’s too much money.” While the media laughed at this revelation, he added, “I mean, you want the truth?”, with a chuckle.
The Islanders traded for the former Canucks captain because they thought he could lead them to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. With the GM’s public declaration, everyone in the NHL is curious about the state of this deal and even the extension.
Why is the NHL world confused?
Both, Bo Horvat and his followers, were taken aback by the unexpected trade. The Islanders’ decision to give Horvat an $8.5 million, eight-year extension, complicates matters for fans. And now, after the Islanders’ general manager made a frank comment regarding the trade, things are even more perplexing.
