“Legs to Burn a Lot of Oxygen”: Big Wave Surfing Icon Laird Hamilton Gives a Glimpse of One of Its Kind Underwater Bodybuilding Drills

Surfing is no child’s play. For conquering the big azure ocean, one requires to undergo a rigorous training regimen. From underwater breathing exercises to surfing prompts above the water, a surfer has to be well-versed in the sport. Owing to this sport of moxie, big-wave surfer Laird Hamilton has introduced a tool that helps surfers and athletes to achieve physical robustness to perform their respective sports-specific prompts.

Ace surfer, Laird Hamilton and his wife Gabrielle Reece founded a training program called XPT life. The fitness program comprises three main parts, viz. Breathing, Moving, and Recovery. Interestingly, the 58-year-old surfer was recently spotted in the XPT pool, where he taught an interesting approach to underwater breathing exercises. Let’s see what Hamilton has to say about it.

Laird Hamilton details his approach toward underwater squatting

In his latest Instagram post, the Waterman collaborated with the official social media handle of XPT to share his perspective on underwater squatting. In the video, the 58-year-old was seen performing several underwater squatting prompts. As per the surfer, the “basis for starting a drill with squat jump would be oxygen consumption”.

Explaining further about the squatting exercises, Hamilton stated, squatting helps your “legs to burn a lot of oxygen. So, it puts you in oxygen debt very quickly.” And burning the oxygen makes it easy to hold your breath underwater. “Start with squat jumps to intensify breath hold”, added Laird.
