For Maria Shriver, divorce was devastating. Not only was her marriage of 25 years coming to an end, but it was also scrutinized publicly. Recently, Shriver revealed the intricate details of what she went through, after her divorce.

The journalist sat down with Hoda Kotb, on her podcast, Making Space with Hoda Kotb, where, she revealed several stories from her childhood to adulthood. One of the significant anecdotes from the podcast was Shriver’s reaction to her separation.

Maria Shriver’s looked for some peace at a convent

Since the news of the separation was devastating and everywhere in the media, Shriver wanted to look for answers. Coming from a family where significant incidents were often not spoken about; the star needed an outlet. Speaking to Kotb and the listeners, the journalist began by talking about her journey of permitting herself to a life of freedom.

After she came to know the truth about Schwarzenegger’s infidelity, Shriver sought some solace. One of the things the journalist did, was going to a convent. To comfort herself, look for answers, and sit in silence, Shriver visited a cloistered convent so she could seek advice.

In the podcast, Shriver recalls that she had her revealing moment when the Reverend Mother spoke to her and told her about her search for permission. The journalist recalled, “She goes you can’t come live here, but you do have permission to go out become Maria. And I was like sobbing!” The interaction sent chills through both Kotb and Shriver. While their divorce was tough, both Shriver and Schwarzenegger came through.

Meanwhile, Arnold Schwarzenegger took the blame upon himself

Considering the public nature of the split, Arnold Schwarzenegger has often openly spoken about and admitted to his fault. Maria Shriver and Schwarzenegger split after the former Governor of California, revealed in 2011, that he had a son out of wedlock with his housekeeper. Since then, amidst a lot of debate and controversies, Arnie has taken account of his wrongdoings.

It took the former couple 10 more years to finalize the divorce and arrive at a settlement. Nevertheless, they have been amicable throughout the rocky road and even took care of their 4 children together. The two have moved on to their own roads in life. Currently, Schwarzenegger is dating 48-year-old physiotherapist Heather Milligan.
