Another day, another McLaren-Honda story. However, this one seems to spin a tale of hope as Stoffel Vandoorne feels confident ahead of the Singapore GP. Vandoorne and teammate Fernando Alonso had to endure a dismal Italian GP where both drivers retired. Even if both had survived to see the chequered flag, Monza is a power-hungry track and the MCL32 would have been nowhere. But the Belgian felt that they had a good package for the weekend. “In terms of the performance of our package on track, and from my personal side too, I think it was a very strong weekend considering the layout of Monza, and the straight line speed deficit we know we have,”

To be perfectly honest, the situation was not as bad as everyone thought it was. Vandoorne had managed to sneak into Q3 in Qualifying even though he had an engine penalty looming over his head. Also, fortunately for the young Belgian, the issue that he faced in Monza may not require an engine change.

“It appears  that the failure does not mean a penalty for the next race in Singapore, because I think we can change the parts. So everything should be fine with the engine, and that is positive for Singapore because we want to have a trouble-free weekend. I think Singapore will be a good opportunity for us to score some good points, but we need to remember there are two Mercedes, two Ferrari and two Red Bulls that will still be in front of us. So we just need to work hard and then I think we can emerge as the fourth team in Singapore.”

We sincerely hope for their sake that Vandoorne’s bold prediction actually comes good or it would mean a lot of red faces.
