In a startling turn of events, a municipal golf course that recently celebrated its grand opening finds itself submerged in floodwaters. After over a decade of planning, the facility owners delighted the entire Yorktown community to learn that it was all set and ready.

But the devastating Lower Hudson Valley left the city in shambles, wrecking havoc everywhere and in the process, destroying the newly built golf course.

They inaugurated the golf course on July 8 with much aplomb. There was a ribbon cutting ceremony along with a DJ set to celebrate the town-owned par-3 golf course. The very next day on July 9, the Hudson floods left the facility half submerged in water as workers present that day tried to save whatever they could.

The golf course was completely flooded with water,” Town Supervisor Tom Diana said.

The course shut on Monday and within the next 24 hours, a large portion of water had receded. The club reopened on Thursday after and preliminary investigations revealed minor and reversible damage. However, the pro shop did experience some flooding, which had an impact on a variety of equipment, including golf carts and grounds-keeping equipment.

Facility owners hopeful of quick recovery

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, a member of the facility owners said the crew tried to minimize damage to the maximum extent.

Even if we open, still we’re still going to have repairs going on, but we’d like to get the public back on our course as soon as possible,” Chris Munoz said.

The facility did open by the weekend, a great sign for the community of Yorktown. The owners and workers have displayed great dedication in restoring and opening the course for public use within such notice. It is owned by the Yorktown Golf Group, who as per the contract will pay $78,000 annually and it will be rising every year.

The golf course contains a restaurant/bar, an outdoor dining area with a pergola, and golf carts are available for those with mobility impairments. It is located off Taconic State Parkway and borders Route 6 and Lee Boulevard. There is a location where you can buy cold refreshments and a fire pit halfway through the course. The community and its people were really excited with the golf course finally opening, with officials expressing great happiness.

We are so excited that, after so many years, this group has opened this place in 14 weeks,” Diana said, asking for a round of applause. “Fourteen weeks, after waiting more than 10 years, to have this jewel in the town of Yorktown today.”
