Speaking to Raghunath Ramanathan, Omar Mitchell, the vice president of Sustainable Infrastructure and Growth Initiatives at the NHL, touched upon how the organization has been at the helm of sustainable sports practices over the years. They have also vocally advocated for major sports corporations to adopt greener alternatives and begin focusing on their environmental responsibilities.

“When we think about things that we need for the continuation of hockey, we need things like natural ice, cold weather, and fresh water,” said Mitchell. “We also need vibrant and healthy communities where we can play our sport.”

For the NHL, environmental sustainability is important. Since the goal of the NHL Green Programme is to instill sustainable business practices throughout the League and its member clubs, Commissioner Gary Bettman announced it at the 2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. In 2014, it became the first North American sports league to conduct a sustainability analysis and released a report that described the environmental impact of the league.

The NHL’s commitment to sustainability goes hand in hand with its embrace of technological innovations.

One notable initiative is the installation of smart ice-monitoring technology in arenas. These sensors continuously measure ice conditions, enabling precise temperature adjustments and reducing energy consumption. This not only improves the quality of gameplay but also minimizes environmental impact.

According to the 2014 sustainability report, the NHL’s venues’ energy use was responsible for 70% of the league’s carbon emissions. NHL can produce insights from the data and turn them into actions that can minimize the organization’s carbon footprint, thanks to the data and analytical tools it has access to through collaboration. The league can strengthen its sustainability efforts and set ambitious goals for the future with the help of cutting-edge analytics and real-time data collection.

“The millions of fans who watch our sport can be positively affected by the League’s efforts and, hopefully, embed sustainability into their lifestyle,” said Mitchell. “That’s where we’re going to have a network effect that’s going to move the needle positively in our climate fight.”
