A 38-year-old cyclist from Dundee, on his way to India, has gone missing. The mystery deepened as reports surfaced that Steven Harper while foraging for sustenance, had consumed potentially lethal mushrooms. Since then, a shadow of uncertainty has been cast over his whereabouts.

The mystery revolving around the Scottish cyclist has led to a frantic search for clues. With the perplexing turn of events, family and authorities have been looking for answers to be able to trace the cyclist.

Enigmatic disappearance of the cyclist

In an attempt to fulfill his passion for cycling, Harper set off on a remarkable journey starting from Dundee wishing to make it to India. However, the universe had got entirely different plans for him since his venture was marred by misfortune.

The cyclist made his way through Andorra, Spain and France before he encountered theft, losing his bank card, cycle and passport. According to the cyclist’s last post, his geotagged location shows a hilltop overlooking Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, a location near the French border with Monaco.

Harper’s brother shared his worries stating, His last message on November 23 said he had ingested a potentially lethal mushroom while foraging for food and we have not heard from him since. This has only come to my attention in the last 24 hours and I’ve been too distraught to write this.’ The last details of his whereabouts became a haunting enigma, especially after his distressing message informing that he had ingested a potentially lethal mushroom while supposedly spending the night on the hill.    

Desperate search amidst adversity

Harper’s family has mobilized efforts to locate him and his brother, Dale, has initiated a social media post to seek assistance from others. The cyclist who taught English online as a foreign language loved to share his pictures while traveling on Facebook. Before Harper disappeared, he had uploaded a series of videos where he was seen enjoying some fruit beside a campfire.

The wife of the cyclist had been alarmed by him about eating some boiled mushrooms he had found nearby. Dale raised concerns while sharing the details, Steven said he had been throwing up but he felt better. But it was radio silence from then. No one has been able to get a hold of him since and we don’t know if he is living with a debilitated body, if something has happened with the mushrooms he ate, where he slept.” After the robbery, supposedly Stephen had been only left with a sleeping bag and few personal items that add to the fret.  

The Foreign Office has taken up the matter while the family has raised alarm about the missing cyclist on social media channels and Missing People Scotland. Potential health risks from consuming the wild mushrooms paired with the distressing messages have fueled a race against time challenging the efforts to track him.
