USA Cycling suspended Justin Williams, co-founder of L39ION of Los Angeles, for the second consecutive year. This suspension comes in the wake of a controversial incident during the Audi Denver Littleton Criterium. Williams, known for his prowess on the cycling circuit, has faced scrutiny and consequences for his actions during the race.

The controversy began when in-race video footage surfaced on social media. This video captured a pivotal moment in the Audi Denver Littleton Criterium. The video, taken from helmet cameras worn by fellow riders, showed Justin Williams making a risky maneuver during a left-hand turn, colliding with fellow cyclist Thomas Gibbons from the Automatic-ABUS Racing team. The collision resulted in a crash involving both riders, with no others implicated.

Subsequently, an altercation between the two riders escalated into a verbal exchange. USA Cycling, in response to the incident and its aftermath, took action by investigating the matter and subsequently levying fines.

Consequences and Criticisms: Williams’ Suspension and Public Reaction

Justin Williams has reportedly received a two-month suspension, slated to be served from April 5 to June 2, 2024. This suspension period coincides with several high-profile criteriums. This includes events in the southeastern US Speedweek series and races like the Athens Twilight Criterium and Sunny King Criterium, which are part of the American Criterium Cup (ACC).

While Williams’ suspension has drawn attention, it is not without controversy. Lauren Dodge, manager of Automatic-ABUS Racing, expressed frustration with the decision, arguing that a two-month suspension is insufficient. According to USAC rules, violations involving “Violence or intentional injury of any person” are subject to a six-month suspension. Dodge’s critique underscores concerns that such behavior might be increasingly tolerated within the sport.

This marks the second consecutive year that Justin Williams has faced suspension due to incidents involving violent behavior. In 2022, Williams was suspended for five months following a physical altercation with riders from the Best Buddies team. The incident occurred after a race in Salt Lake City when Williams intervened to defend his brother Cory Williams. Both Hernandez and Sierra from the Best Buddies team also received suspensions for their involvement.

In response to last year’s incident, USA Cycling had pledged to work with ACC organizers to monitor rider behavior in real-time using video replays to identify unsportsmanlike conduct. Despite these efforts, the recent incident at the Littleton Criterium raises questions about the effectiveness of such measures.

The Future of Justin Williams and Cycling

Amidst the controversy, Justin Williams made headlines earlier this year with the announcement of the Circuit Racing International Tour (CRIT). This initiative, backed by Williams Racing Development and supported by Wasserman Ventures, aims to provide exclusive racing opportunities in major US markets. However, with Williams’ suspension scheduled for 2024, questions arise about his participation in the inaugural CRIT Championship, in St. Petersburg, Florida, on October 21.
