Lou Retton’s battle against pneumonia

The athlete’s legacy as the first American woman to gain the all-around gold in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics catapulted her to iconic status. Very soon, Lou Retton earned the nickname “America’s Sweetheart,” finding her way to gracing the covers of magazines and gracing famous breakfast cereal, Wheaties boxes.

Having prowess in floor exercise and vault, Lou Retton has excelled in all-round exercises. She has strengthened as a revolutionary, presenting a combination of speed, accuracy, and power. However, her life took an unpredictable turn owing to her recent health crisis. A life-threatening bout of pneumonia took charge of her body leaving her relying on a nasal oxygen tube for breathing aid. 

Unsure about her future, Lou Retton claimed, “I have no idea what the future holds for me. I don’t know if I’m going to have lasting issues with my lungs.” The lingering questions about the long-term impact of her lung issues added complexity to her recovery.

Financial strains amidst adversity

Featuring the famous American reality show “Dancing With the Stars” in 2018, her triumphs radiated inspiration and admiration. Compounding Lou Retton’s health ordeal were the financial strains that escalated her misery. After a divorce in 2018, followed by the seismic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the athlete found herself in a precarious financial condition.

Lou Retton was left without any health insurance which came as a blow in her journey of recovering and overcoming the complications posed by pneumonia. To alleviate the mounting medical bill, her daughter started a crowdfunding campaign. 

However, even in distress, the athlete refused to surrender, and her statement resonated with her motivation to fight against all odds and proceed forward. She stated, “When you face death in the eyes, I have so much to look forward to.” Soon, the news of Lou Retton’s health battle spurred an outpouring of support and raised $460,000.
