Cycling has long been a sport, even if not the most popular one. In a world of speed and adrenaline, the cycling world still holds a strong foothold, with Tour de France leading the way as the most popular cycling event in the world. While cycling isn’t always exciting, it is undeniably practical. From what it does to help reduce our carbon footprint, to just being an all-round convenient way to get around from one place to another, cycling is multi-faceted.
However, there are new whispers on cycling street, indicating the arrival of something big. This comes as a new venture is hoping to popularize and invest in team cycling in the United States. The sport involves teams of 8, comprised equally of men and women, speeding in a velodrome – an arena with steep-banked oval tracks. Olympic cyclist David Chauner and Guilford financier Rick Mayer are among the main entities to launch the league. The duo is aiming to incorporate the facility into a sports and entertainment development. Litchfield businessman Mark Greenberg is committing to build the facility on 150 acres he owns in Windsor. The 82-foot-tall sports dome, complete with its own football turf, is expected to be functional by mid-November.

This new development will serve as, both, a league office and a racing site, with the potential to double as a concert and entertainment venue. The facility will be available for basketball, and volleyball among other sports.

What the Future Looks Like
These structures are expected to be constructed by 2026, with an estimated cost of $25-80 million depending on the level of finishes. The league is expected to begin next year, with exhibition matches scheduled for September 2024 in Las Vegas. Greenberg’s vision is to develop a premium sports and entertainment complex for the sport in Windsor.
Both Mayer and Chauner seem to be very excited about the scope of the project. “I just think there’s an incredible amount of momentum in that area,” Mayer said, adding that the investors are looking for new opportunities. Mayer also remains very confident about raising capital for the venture. “I don’t think we are going to have much of a big hurdle raising the funds needed to launch this,” he said.
