World Record-Holding Amputee to Climb Colorado Mountain With Just Her Hands for a Friend

The bilateral above-knee amputee, Mandy Horvath, has been overcoming the physical challenges that life poses and fighting with the mental challenges prevailing over her disabilities. She refuses to receive any aiding accessories like prosthetics and without any assistance, prepares to set out to conquer Handies Peak.

The journey scheduled to take place between October 12 and 13 will be a test of endurance and resilience for her. However, besides being a personal climb, Hovarth will be dedicating her success to her best friend Brian Adams, whom she affectionately calls Slacker, who works as the morning host for 101.1 The Fox in Kansas City.

Hovarth shared about her motive behind adopting this challenging task with Fox 31, “Brian gives back to his community, he’s spent his entire life helping others. That is why we are committed to helping him in his time of need.”

Adams has recently been diagnosed with a type of cancer known as Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). His sudden diagnosis has fueled Hovarth’s determination to make a difference for her friend, Slacker since she has been closely associated with the disease when she lost her grandmother in 2020 from AML. Hovarth reiterates that she only had a span of seven days to spend with her between her diagnosis and demise. On her way to the summit of Handies Peak, Hovarth will immerse herself in raising awareness and funds to support her friend.

Conquering physical challenges has been a cakewalk for her since she has previously held records for scaling mountains before. Among her list of accomplishments, Hovarth has seized the title of becoming the first woman in the world to scale Mount Kilimanjaro devoid of any external prosthetic assistance. Besides, she has captured Pikes Peak, which qualifies to be a challenging ascent, on two different occasions.
