Resembling the tossed tennis ball, pro sports journeys often witness swaying back and forth. With a gleeful ascent at 34 years, one player has not only made a remarkable comeback but also left spectators in awe. Sabine Lisicki, the Berlin native with a racket as powerful as her determination, recently emerged victorious after a tumultuous journey against time. Opening the floodgate of tears, Lisicki’s victory speech marked the narrative of an emotional triumph with unyielding spirits.

However, the 2013 Wimbledon finalist’s journey to this victorious moment was riddled with challenges. While Lisicki’s racket roared in Calgary, hitting shots at unparalleled speeds, a past injury highlighted her passion behind this epic revival. Apparently, three years ago, she had to undergo a serious knee operation, a tragedy that cast unforgiving doubts on her tennis future. As the happy tears flowed, the tennis icon’s indomitable persistence gained an essence of admirable cordiality online.

With her smashes reaching a pace of 209 km/h, Lisicki’s skillful blows resembled her previous glory, a feat unmatched on the WTA Tour. This triumph marked her first tournament win in nine years, securing the ITF Challenger against Canadian Stacey Fung in a gripping 7:6 (7:2), 6:7 (5:7), 6:3 tennis battle. After 19 months of tracking brutal rehabilitation, the emotional win put an end to her harrowing battles, lifting the career-threatening halt since 2020.

Lisicki’s triumphant return in Calgary 60k, with serves consistently over 200 km/h and 53 aces in five matches, catapulted her through 99 spots in the rankings. Crediting her father, Richard, for being her guiding force since the initial 2022 comeback, the tennis sensation could not hold back her happy tears during the post-game speech. Acknowledging her first tournament win since the 2014 Hong Kong performance, Lisicki was recorded saying, “Just so thankful to be living this, and to actually have a title here,” but her words of gratitude extended further.
