The World Dog Surfing Championship is a premiere dog surfing event. The event came to being as the brainchild of the author of the book “The Dog’s Guide to Surfing”, Kevin Reed. It started in the year 2006. The Linda Mar State Beach hosted this year’s edition right outside of San Francisco. Pet lovers from all over flocked to the beach in large numbers, with their pets all ready to compete.

Dogs of all shapes and sizes put on wetsuits and goggles to catch some waves. However, their primary aim revolved around competing in seven surfing categories. They separated solo surfers by small, medium, large, and extra large. The event also made sure to honor winners for best tandem human-dog surf and best dog-dog ride. The length of the entire ride and the nature and style of the dog while racing decided the winners of the race.

In order to accommodate the furry friends who were afraid of water, they also organized fetching contests. Apart from surfing and fetching, the event also had a competition for the best beach fashion and costume. This made sure that the event felt completely inclusive and fun for all.

The organization also has another goal in mind while conducting the event.

“Furry” fun also has a bigger goal

This year, the organization held the event to raise money and provide financial assistance to local animal and welfare groups like the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA and Rocket Dog Rescue. Many surfing and environmental charity organizations could also generate money from the event.

The event also set up an adoption booth at the beach, in case any attendee wished to take a dog back home and enrich both of their lives. The entire event is no lesser than a carnival, with different merchandise too available on their website. The amount of hype and interest it generates every year is quite astonishing!
