A 14-year-old teenager from Wexford passed away under unfortunate and heart-breaking circumstances last week. What was potentially a simple day out in their home pool turned into a fatal and tragic afternoon for the family of Alex Saunders.

The 14-year old was allegedly found in the garden pool at his own home in Cromwellsfort Drive by his family, laying motionless. This immediately prompted them to alert the emergency services and what followed was a massive and swift response from the different agencies to provide medical aid.

Tragedy strikes in Wexford

The National Ambulance service tried their best while in transit to the Wexford General Hospital. His condition showed no signs of improvement and the family decided to shift him to Temple Street Children’s Hospital.

The medical team strived and worked relentlessly to save the beloved young child as the family waited in hope and anticipation. Doctors informed the family of the tragic news on Sunday evening, after a three day battle between life and death.

Alex’s family in complete shock

Alex’s entire family was present when the doctor gave them the news of his death. The sudden death and manner of his demise sent shockwaves across his friends and family. He is survived by his parents, Paul and Patience, along with his 7 siblings and grandmother, Sally.

His mother Patience, is a well-known figure in the Wexford community due to her association with Collective Sensory Group. She held the position of chairperson at one point and there is great respect for her among people. Her well wishers sent their regards and condolences to the family upon learning the news.

Speaking to the media, fellow board member of the group, George Lawlor was distraught and unable to fathom the whole situation.

He said, “To lose a young life in a tragic accident like this is just devastating. By all accounts, Alex was a popular young lad and his parents Patience and Paul are well-known in the local community.”

“Patience has played a huge part in the board of the Collective Sensory Group and has been the Chairperson for the last year. The thoughts of everyone involved are with Patience, Paul and the entire family on such a tragic loss.”

The death has left the members of the community in total disbelief. The local Irish police or “Gardai” informed the media that an autopsy will be conducted to decipher the cause of death and understand the circumstances around his tragic demise.
