Fans and athletes of the rugby world underwent unimaginable turmoil recently. Arturas Rudys, a 27-year-old player from Wisbech Rugby Club in Cambridgeshire, tragically collapsed and passed away during a match. The incident occurred during a home game against Diss.

Despite heroic efforts by first aiders, teammates, and emergency responders, Rudys passed away on the field. In the wake of this devastating loss, both Wisbech and Ipswich Rugby Clubs came together to pay their respects. Amid touching tributes, the heart-wrenching incident had a profound impact on the rugby community.

The fatal match between Wisbech and Diss on that fateful Saturday came to an abrupt halt as players and spectators witnessed Arturas Rudys’ sudden collapse. Emergency services, including two ambulances, the air ambulance, and the fire service, rushed to the scene, attempting to resuscitate him.

However, it was a heartbreaking day for everyone involved. The East of England Ambulance Service later confirmed that Rudys had suffered a cardiac arrest and couldn’t be revived.

In the face of this unimaginable tragedy, Wisbech Rugby Club Secretary, David Dobson, extended the club’s deepest sympathies and support to Mr. Rudys’ family. Not only, the player’s immediate circle shared the grief, but the broader rugby community also mourned the loss. The match was abandoned,  A pall of sadness also enveloped the pitch.

The rugby community, known for its camaraderie and mutual respect, immediately rallied around to pay tribute to Arturas Rudys. Wisbech Rugby Club described him as a “hugely valued and respected” member of their team. Notably, Ipswich RFC, based at Humber Doucy Lane, announced their decision to retire the number 14 shirt in memory of Rudys.

In a remarkable display of solidarity, a GoFundMe campaign initiated by Mr. Rudys’ girlfriend, Jolita, has garnered immense support. The campaign has raised over £21,000 so far, with over 750 people contributing. Jolita, in a heartfelt message on the GoFundMe page, conveyed her determination to persevere for the sake of their two-year-old child, Emilju.
