Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton took second place at the US Grand Prix 2019 to wrap up his 6th Driver’s Championship. In the cooldown room, Sebastian Vettel delighted fans with a classy gesture when he personally congratulated his rival.

It is a well-known fact that Hamilton and Vettel are good friends off track and have massive respect for each other. It was worth noting that Vettel was the first retirement of the race, following bad start, struggling to heat up his tyres and a broken rear suspension on Lap 8.

However, he chose not to wallow in his misery, manned up and congratulated the Briton. Ferrari themselves had a nightmarish race, with Charles Leclerc only managing a distant and lonely 4th.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff admitted that he was “very proud” to see the team clinch a historic World Championship double. He praised Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas and even the entire team for a job well done, as all their hard work paid off.

He said, “When it ends up like this, one driver wins, the other wins the championship, the script cannot be any better.”

Meanwhile, Hamilton’s father, Anthony proudly told Sky Sports, “An unbelievable win, six world championships, who would ever have dreamed it.”

“We didn’t really talk much about the championship. It’s always about doing well at the next race.

“You’re only as good as your last race to a degree, the focus is always to win if you possibly can, and when the opportunity like this comes around to win the world championship, you have to think about your game a little bit more.

“I’m sure he was managing those tyres as best he possibly could. It wasn’t enough. I’m glad for Valtteri as he had pole, got the win and we’ve come from fifth to second.

He admitted that six titles meant the world to him and compared it to Hamilton’s debut season in 2007.
