Mercedes AMG F1 team principal Toto Wolff believes that the Williams 2018 driver lineup should be more bold. The Grove team are currently mulling over the decision to choose a driver to partner Lance Stroll next season. But having said that there is a financial reality they live in and they have to find the right compromise.” Russell is a Mercedes junior driver and has been getting a few outings in the car. Norris is from the McLaren Young Drivers’ Programme and Leclerc is a Ferrari Academy driver. HAPPY WITH HIS OWN LINEUP Meanwhile Wolff believes that the current Mercedes pairing of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas is perfect. But despite that, he is keeping a watchful eye out for any developments in the driver market. He continued, “In so far as I would like the pairing to continue, we are committed to both of them in 2018, but having said that 2019 is a very exciting new year. There are young drivers that will have gained more experience and some of the very good ones like Daniel [Ricciardo] become free. What we want to see is how the first third of the season pans out, whether our car is good enough and strong enough. Williams F1 is another team that has a lot of history in Formula One. The origins of the team can be traced back to 1977. What?s different about this team is that it has always been a family-run team.

The founder of the team is Sir Frank Williams, who functioned in the capacity of the Team Principal for quite some time. His daughter, Claire Williams, succeeded him as the Deputy Team Principal before stepping down from her role in 2020.

Following a dismal campaign in 2019 and a major financial crunch in 2020, the team put up a majority stake of the team for sale. In August, a private American firm, Dorilton Capital, acquired the team.

Following the team's sale, Claire announced her departure from F1 along with her father. For a team that's been family owned for well over 4 decades, it truly was the end of an era.

In its long and storied history, Williams has produced 7 World Champions. They are Alan Jones, Keke Rosberg, Nelson Piquet, <a href="https://www.essentiallysports.com/tag/nigel-mansell/">Nigel Mansell</a>, <a href="https://www.essentiallysports.com/tag/alain-prost/">Alain Prost</a>, Damon Hill, and Jacques Villeneuve.

In their inaugural year in 1977, they did not enjoy a great start. However, in 1978, Alan Jones brought forth their first tally of points with a 4th placed finish in South Africa. He followed it up later in the season with a 2nd in the USA.

In 1979, Williams entered two cars, with Clay Regazzoni partnering Jones. Regazzoni bagged the first win in Great Britain before Jones followed that feat up with three back-to-back wins in Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands. He took another win in Canada, with Regazzoni in 3rd.

In 1980 and 1981, Jones clinched the World Constructors' Championship for Williams F1. They did it again in 1986 and 1987 with Nelson Piquet winning the Drivers' Championship.

From 1992 to 1994, the British outfit sealed the Constructors' championship again. They took their final Constructors' titles in 1996 and 1997.

Sadly, the team is yet to replicate its once feared win streak in Formula 1. Over two decades on, Williams is a shell of its former self. The British team is in a constant battle to score some points.

Robert Kubica made his return to Formula One in 2019. His first taste of an F1 car was when he signed with Renault as a test driver.

Sadly, his comeback only lasted a single year following a frustrating time with the Williams Formula 1 team. The Polish driver currently features on the Alfa Romeo roster as a reserve driver.

However, he suffered a horrific crash at the Canadian Grand Prix that effectively shelved him for the United States Grand Prix.

Incidentally, it also introduced the Formula One world to <a href="https://www.essentiallysports.com/tag/sebastian-vettel/">Sebastian Vettel</a>. H. His return to France saw a new and improved man. He stayed with Sauber until 2009, subsequently he moved to Renault for a year.

Sadly, a rally accident in early 2011 put a damper on his Formula 1 hopes and dreams for a painfully long time. But life gave him a second chance with a seat at <a href="https://www.essentiallysports.com/category/f1/williams/">Williams</a> in 2019.

He is currently the reserve and test driver for the Alfa Romeo F1 team.

After his accident, he won the 2013 World Rally Championship-2. With regard to his F1 results, his maiden podium came in his third race for the BMW team.

He has one career win to his name, at the 2008 Canadian GP, barely a year after his horror crash at the same track. Kubica has also amassed 11 podiums in five years.

Mere days after completing his preseason test with Renault, Kubica was involved in a horrifying rally accident in 2011. The Pole was competing in the Ronde di Andorra rally in Italy when a tricky right-hander effectively ended his hopes of a competitive future in F1.

Whilst negotiating a fast turn at high speed, Robert lost control of his car and slammed into the barrier. The impact and timing of the crash resulted in a barrier impaling the car and Kubica's right arm in the process.

Kubica sustained multiple fractures to his shoulder, arms, and legs. However, the biggest injury was to his right hand, which was partially amputated.

But this wasn't Kubica's first near brush with death. At the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix, Kubica suffered a massive crash after tangling with Jarno Trulli towards the hairpin at the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit. Thankfully, he wasn't seriously injured.
