The WNBA playoffs are finally underway after the 40-game regular season saw fans and teams suffer many shocks during its course. Teams such as the Los Angeles Sparks failed to qualify for the playoffs with the Sparks missing out on the knockouts for a second time in a row. Stars Diana Taurasi and Britney Griner also failed to save the Phoenix Mercury from having a horrendous season. Although the regular seasons came with many surprises the opening night of the playoffs had none to offer as two games kicked off Round 1 in what was a lackluster night of basketball.

The first match of the evening saw the Connecticut Suns beat the Minnesota Lynx by 30 points before defending champions Las Vegas Aces served a similar thrashing to the Chicago Sky. This match was also marred by a physical confrontation as NBA legend Dwyane Wade’s team was dismantled by Chelsea Gray and the Aces.

The former Sparks shooting guard had an underwhelming evening in the T-Mobile arena as she only managed to score 7 points. Her frustration was clearly evident as her foul on Clark was reckless and came at a time when her team was losing by 24 points.

The foul was also a reflection of the game the Sky had as Dwyane Wade’s team looked helpless against the defending champions.

While his success in the league is undeniable it’s his business acumen off it that has garnered him plenty of attention post-retirement. Boasting an incredible net worth of $170 million the 3x NBA champion has many businesses in his portfolio including basketball teams in the NBA and WNBA.

While his ownership ties to the Utah Jazz is common knowledge not many are aware of his ties with WNBA side the Chicago Sky. The Chicago native invested in the team back in July with his specific percentage stake not being made public. This deal might make Wade millions in the near future as the team is evaluated to be the second-most valuable team in the WNBA.
