Former Wimbledon Champion Reacts to ‘Annoying’ Occurrence at Sw19 That’s Having an Adverse Effect on All the Players Involved

Rains, a poster controversy, uncertain schedules, and protests by ‘Just Stop Oil.’ Wimbledon Championships this year came with a whole package of play and sensation. The erratic weather and unpredictable rains are disappointing players as the matches are being pushed back. The Centre Court is being reserved for important matches leaving players who are yet to play their first rounds confined to the smaller courts. While some players made their peace with it, some found it irritable.

Petra Kvitova opened up on the Wimbledon schedule and revealed how it feels to be still waiting to play the first round.

‘The Tennis Letter’ on Twitter posted Kvitova’s comments which reflect the player’s annoyance and sympathy for players who are yet to play their first round. Kvitova said, “We talked in the locker room. We don’t get it. Kasatkina & Swiatek are in R3 & some haven’t finished R1.” She further added that though it is bound to happen at Wimbledon, it is “depressing.”

The Wimbledon champion opined that prioritizing first-round matches and organizing them in the Centre Court can help players in getting along with the schedule. Kvitova said, They should put R1 players on Centre Court. It’s depressing to wait 2 days to play. It can happen at Wimbledon, but it’s annoying.”

Not only the former number one but other players also reacted to the schedule that is disappointing several players, including the one who is playing her last tournament in her career.

The issue was even addressed by one of the officials, explaining how they proceed with the delayed matches.

According to ‘The Guardian,’ a spokesperson for the All England Club revealed, “The scheduling of the order of play each day at the Championships is a complex operation. We take great care when scheduling matches and allocating courts. All decisions are made with fairness and the best interests of the tournament, players, spectators, and our worldwide broadcast audience at heart.”

After winning matches, even Daniil Medvedev and Anett Kontaveit took the issue sportingly. Kontaveit, who played her last match in her career, said that there were no negative feelings as she was still winning her matches then. Medvedev, whose match was delayed, was finally relieved that his match went well and agreed that delays happen in the Grand Slam owing to rain.

Sloane Stephens, who lost to Donna Vekic in her second round, also admitted that at the end of the day, it’s Wimbledon, and rains are inevitable. Her first round was delayed due to rain.
