The Tennis Hall of Fame was formed in 1955, and only 262 legends have been inducted to date. For the first time in over 67 years, none of the nominees were inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2022. Though eight tennis professionals were nominated, none reached the required 75% votes to become a Hall of Famer. The voters include media personnel, existing Hall of Famers, historians, and fans. But now that the Class of 2024 has been released, tennis pundits are making their picks.

The Class of 2023 returned as nominees again, except for one professional. Serena Williams‘ former coach picked a favorite and expressed how worthy the nominees are while rationalizing her own pick.

The inductees not only include tennis professionals but also major contributors who brought a significant change in tennis. But in 2023, only tennis professionals were nominated, and none were picked. Though fans chose their favorite through ballot voting, the nominee did not reach the induction as 75% voting was not called.

Raising this issue, Williams’ ex-coach, Rennae Stubbs, shared how incredible every nominee is and that it does not make sense not to select one among them. So, when John Wertheim, a renowned sports journalist and author, shared the nominees on X, Stubbs expressed her views in the comments.

The former World No.1 wrote, “These were all on the ballot last year except Leander i believe. Makes no sense why they wouldn’t vote them in last time!? I vote Cara for sure. What she did coming from a small country like Zimbabwe. Amazing!” The nominees include Ana Ivanovic, Flavia Pennetta, Cara Black, Carlos Moya, and Daniel Nestor from the Class of 2023.

Leander Paes was an addition to the Class of 2024 along with the other 5 nominees from last year. Black still remains the top Zimbabwean to achieve greater heights in tennis, especially in doubles. She won 5 doubles and 5 mixed doubles Grand Slams while spending 567 weeks at Top-1o. But fans eagerly await the induction of recently retired legendary professionals, and Stubbs, too, reacted to the stunning claim.

The two favorite inductions that fans can’t wait to witness

To be considered a nominee for the International Tennis Hall of Fame, a player must be inactive for at least 5 years. Since Serena and Roger Federer retired in 2022, they need to wait till 2027, at the least. So, a fan posted, “I would also add that I can’t think of a benefit to waiting 5 years for Serena or Roger be inducted. Honestly, the committee should be asking them when would it be convenient for us to honor you.”

Stubbs, who knew the former ATP and WTA world No.1s, declared that she agreed with the fan. But rules are the rules. No amendments were made for almost 6 decades and it is highly unlikely that The Hall would made exceptions. But the tennis community can still hope, given that winning a record number of Slams started with Momma Smash and the Swiss Maestro.
