US Open 2022 breaks an all-time attendance record, thanks to Serena Williams

For the first time in 25 years, Arthur Ashe Stadium was fully packed during the entirety of the US Open this year. The event witnessed the all-time highest attendance during this time. During the two weeks of the main event, along with the fan week, the 2022 US Open broke records, especially in ticket sales.

The attendance record this year broke the previous record that was set in the year 2019. 776,120 people attended the main draw during a two-week period, breaking the previous record of 737,872 established in 2019. If we include the fan week attendance, the overall record is listed as 888,044. Breaking the 853,227 records that was the previous highest attendance.

Carlos Alcaraz defeated Casper Ruud in a super competitive men‘s singles US Open final. Alcaraz became the youngest individual to win a major championship since Rafael Nadal won the French Open as a 19-year-old in 2005. Pete Sampras, who won the U.S. Open in 1990 at 19, was the previous youngest winner at that event.

Alcaraz will surpass Lleyton Hewitt, to become the youngest world number one since the ATP rankings’ inception in 1973. Lleyton Hewitt set the previous record in 2001 at the age of 20 to be the youngest world number one.

On the other hand, Casper Ruud, the fifth-ranked player in the world, failed yet again in his quest to win Norway’s first Grand Slam title. Previously, at the French Open this year, he was defeated by the world Number three Rafael Nadal.
