Today, we saw one of the biggest upsets of the Wimbledon Championships this year, as the world no.1 Iga Swiatek crashed out of the competition in the third round against French star Alize Cornet.

With this result, the French tennis player finally broke the Pol’s incredible 37-match winning streak.

The streak is over for Iga Swiatek at the Wimbledon Championships 2022

In the first set, Cornet played some incredible points to win the set 6-4. She broke the Pol early to give her a massive shock and continued to take the game to Swiatek.

After the first set, Swiatek took a break to regroup herself. However, she could not gain any momentum, as Cornet continued to put her on the back foot. Eventually, the French player won the second set 6-2 and won the match in 1 hour and 32 minutes.

Venus Williams Says Her Sister Serena Williams Inspired Her to Make a Comeback at the Wimbledon Championships 2022

Notably, Cornet beat Serena Williams’ winning streak once at this very event. Earlier at the Australian Open, she beat two Grand Slam champions, Simona Halep and Garbine Muguruza on her way to the quarter-final. Consequently, the 32-year-old French tennis player is having one of the best years of her career in Grand Slam tournaments. 

Earlier, she reached the quarter-final of the Australian Open and then reached the third round of the French Open, where she had to retire from the tournament due to injury. Now, she has reached the fourth round at Wimbledon as well. After ending Swiatek’s winning streak, Cornet showed tremendous humility and praised the Polish player for her incredible achievement. In the next round, Cornet will play the Australian Ajla Tomljanovic.

What’s next for Swiatek?

After winning the French Open title, Swiatek did not play a single grass-court tournament. Understandably, she wanted to give her shoulder a rest after playing continuously on the tour. However, her inexperience on the green surface was clearly visible, as she could not find a way to get past Cornet.

Apart from losing her match-winning streak, she also lost her tournament-winning streak as well. Before Wimbledon, she won 6 consecutive tournaments, which started at the Qatar Open and ended at the French Open.

Despite the loss, Swiatek did not look upset as she was signing autographs for the fans after the match. It seems like she is already focusing on the next Grand Slam, i.e. the US Open. Before starting her hard-court campaign, the world no.1 will play an exhibition match in Poland to raise money for the Ukrainian people.
