Everyone is hailing the “Queen of Toronto,” Jessica Pegula as she successfully defends her Canadian Open title. A silver lining for the American tennis star, after a dismal show at the Paris Olympics. However, the Queen is yet to be crowned with a Grand Slam. And as the last major of the season approaches, Pegula seems to be headed on the right track. Winning Masters 1000 and being a favorite in another. Things finally seem to be working in a golden direction for World No.6, as Andy Roddick thinks that Cincinnati courts favor Pegula!

In his podcast on 13th August 2024, Served with Andy Roddick, the American tennis legend gave an analysis of the courts at Cincinnati. He said, “The courts in Cincinnati played a little deal there on Saturday. And those things are fast, not a lot of grit. When you first get on a court and you kind of rub your toes back and forth on the court, the less drag, the quicker it is, right?” When courts are faster, there is little energy absorption by the court as the ball travels, leading to less drag.

While detailing the feel on the tennis courts, Roddick remarked, “If it feels like sandpaper, it’s going to be a little slow. It’s going to chew the ball up.” It is the surface of the court that makes things different for the players. While hard courts are known for their all-around experience for the players and less injury, red Clay courts are known for slowing down the ball and a slow and high bounce compared to other surfaces. The grass courts are very quick. As a result, the ball generally bounces low, keeping rallies relatively short.

The last 3 months have been a rollercoaster ride for the tennis players. In addition to the usual calendar proceeding from Clay Court to Grass Court and finally ending at Hard Court, this time it had another stop in between the Grass and Hard Court swing back to Clay Court for Paris. A difficult transition between the courts, another tournament to adjust, and then immediately proceeding to the American continent. But Pegula aced it! The American played Olympics, though she was unable to leave a mark in both the categories: singles and doubles. However, the Canadian Open washed away all the disappointment.

Praising Pegula on her recent run victory, Roddick hopes that the player will carry on at Cincinnati too. He said, “But Jess Pegula props on a well-thought victory needed, and hopefully continued success from there…” Moreover, Pegula needs to pull up her socks if she wants to sustain her chances at the Grand Slam as the young Americans are taking over the tennis courts. And the latest one to be added to the list is Amanda Anisimova, Pegula’s final opponent at the Canadian Open.

Jessica Pegula assesses the “tough” tennis scenario in the US as youngsters dominate the courts

Coco Gauff, Emma Navarro, Amanda Anisimova, and even Danielle Collins are a few of the many names ruling American tennis right now. And the youngsters are challenging the incumbent champions such as Jessica Pegula, Taylor Townsend, and others. The dominance of youngsters is clear with the fact that, while Pegula is yet to claim a single Grand Slam, Gauff is the defending champion at the US Open 2024, and has claimed a doubles Grand Slam at the French Open 2024.

Pegula herself knows the fact. She said, “Yeah, it’s been awesome. I feel like we’ve been strong, really, for the last few years. The depth has been really good. It’s amazing we have five girls in the top 15, which is a crazy stat. It’s tough being in the U.S. and playing tennis because there are so many bigger sports.”

With time, the numbers of young players in the top would only increase. Moreover, when the international scenario is taken into account, these numbers skyrocket. The veteran Pegula needs to pull up her socks and get her racquet ready to claim a few titles and a Grand Slam.
