In the press conference at the Miami Open, Danielle Collins talked about her viral illness and neck pain. Also, she praised the WTA physio for helping her out during her match against Vera Zvonareva.

“You know, I think it felt the way it looked, definitely. It was a little bit challenging. One of the biggest things with my viral illness has been dealing with some nagging neck pain. That’s been one of the biggest challenges I have had to work through, especially as I have been coming back and started hitting again. That was flaring up a lot, and still hasn’t completely gone away obviously,” Collins said about her injuries.

“Yeah, you know, I played a really good first set, felt great, and then it started to kind of go downhill in the second set, but I was luckily able to work through it mentally. I think the awesome WTA physio that came out was able to help and support and, you know, really make a little bit of a difference there to help me get through the match. So that was great. Yeah, I hope that I can come back on Monday and do a little bit better and definitely feel better,” Collins further said about her match against Zvonareva.

No.11 in the WTA rankings, Collins entered the top 10 after the Australian Open. Incidentally, she’s also the highest-ranked American player on the WTA tour. In her first match at the Miami Open, she had to battle really hard against Anna Bondar to get the win. In the next match, she again faced a tough battle against Zvonareva, especially on the second set. Eventually, the American won the match by 6-1,6-4 in 1 hour and 18 minutes.

In the round of 16, she will now face a tricky opponent and the no.8 seed, Ons Jabeur. This will definitely be a tough challenge for the American tennis player. Notably, she reached the semi-final of the Miami Open in 2018, which was her best result.
