Definitely Crying This Morning”: Serena Williams in Disbelief as ‘King Richard’ Gets Nominated for Oscars

Tennis megastar and global cultural icon Serena Williams has an emotional morning ahead of her. Earlier today, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominated ‘King Richard’ for six Oscars.

‘King Richard’, a biographical drama produced by both Venus and Serena, tells the story of the sisters in their rise to superstardom. They faced incredible odds but their father Richard Williams always stood defiant against those odds to help his daughters reach where they are today.

In fact, both Venus and Serena Williams wanted to present their story from their father’s perspective. Hence, that explains why the movie’s title is King Richard, which was a nickname for their father.

Now, the movie has bagged a staggering six Oscar nominations, and Serena is over the moon.

Serena Williams pens an emotional message of congrats to King Richard team

Serena Williams, roughly two hours after the Academy announced the nominees, reacted to the development. She took to Instagram to share the news of her movie’s Oscar nominations.

“I woke up to this,” wrote Serena. Moreover, she was clearly unable to contain her excitement, as she shared how the “film is really nominated for an OSCAR!!!!!!! The 23-time Grand Slam champion’s excitement is quite apparent from her generous use of exclamation marks in her post.

“This is CRAZY!!!!!!! Serena wrote. Then, she expressed emotionally how she went “from Compton to Wimbledon to Academy awards”. In that vein, Serena shared how “everyone can dream and your dream can come true”.

In fact, Serena even wrote how she is “definitely crying this morning”, seeing as her film’s six Oscar nominations are what she saw first thing in the morning. Subsequently, she tagged all people involved in the making of the movie, including her sister and co-producer Venus Williams.

She also congratulated Will Smith, and even pop-culture sensation Beyonce Knowles, who secured her first-ever Oscar nomination for her original song ‘Be Alive’ for the movie. While congratulating Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton, who played young Venus and Serena respectively, the 40-year-old star also congratulated everyone she “did not @ (tag) as (she is) so emotional.”

Fellow celebrities heap praises for King Richard’s nominations

Following Serena Williams’ emotional message of congratulations to the King Richard team, celebrities commented and praised the movie for its achievements. American media personality Kim Kardashian was one of the first people to congratulate Serena through ‘clapping’ and ‘fire’ emojis.

Additionally, Serena’s coach Patrick Mouratoglou, who also coaches ATP World No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas, commented on the post. “Totally deserved!” he wrote, congratulating his mentee on the fantastic feat.

Moreover, popular American actor Michael B. Jordan also commented on Serena’s post, using a string of fire emojis to express his excitement and wonder. Saniyya Sidney, who plays a young Venus Williams in the movie, too, commented “JOYOUS!!!” on the post. She followed her comment with the emojis of a heart, a crown, and a tennis racket.

Clearly, all of Hollywood, and especially the cast and crew of the movie, are overjoyed at the occasion. After all, the historic and stupendous story of the Williams sisters deserved nothing less than the recognition it is getting.
