Victory against an invincible legend always sounds sweet. Who knows it better than Bianca Andreescu? The highest-ranked Canadian in the WTA was simply on a roll in 2019. She triumphed over Serena Williams to bag the US Open and Canadian Open. A new star had arrived. Plaudits flew high and fast as she stamped her authority in the tennis world. The first Canadian to win a major singles title, she also added another first to her bag. The daughter of Romanian immigrants became the first teenager to clinch a major singles title since Russia’s Maria Sharapova in 2006. Yet, downfall beckoned, unfortunately though.

A highest career ranking of Number 4 in 2019 is all a thing of the past. Injury, pandemic, and an abysmal form played spoilsport. The result? She slipped down the rankings and is currently in 44 place. However, she is in no mood to give up.

Bianca Andreescu seems to have zeroed in on 2023 to return to the top. But impediments chase her. She suffered an ankle injury at the Miami Open and had to leave the court in a wheelchair. However, she refused to give up. Andreescu reached the mixed doubles finals at the French Open. In singles, she made it to the third round in both the French Open and Wimbledon.

It looks as if she is still determined to prove her doubters wrong. Bianca Andreescu abhors the number 44 (her current ranking). She is gearing up to be back in Top 10.

I don’t like to see that number next to my name and I know I can be better than that. My goal by the end of the year is to be top 20, hopefully top 10. That’s the ranking I should have. I work hard & it will pay off,” she said.

The road to redemption, however, may not be easy. Inconsistency has also marred her chances.

The road ahead could be tough for the Canadian superstar

Andreescu suffered an ignominious first-round elimination in the Citi Open. But her eyes are on the National Bank Open in Montreal. Well, at 23, she has age on her side. The Montreal tournament may see her back with a bang.

But tennis fanatics aren’t ready to put their money on her yet, evident from the reactions of fans of Twitter.

“Bianca has got the talent to be top ten but she got to close matches out. Bianca unfortunately gets tight in matches after having the lead. If she can close matches out more frequently definitely get back to top 10,” wrote OrvilleLloydDouglas.

“Why even post this stuff? Have you seen her play this year? She’s been so erratic. Can’t even handle a heckler in the crowd,” John Driver wrote.

Some are hopeful, though.
