‘I’m Not the Girl Next Door’- Serena Williams Once Sent Out a Strong Message After Featuring on the Cover of a Fashion Magazine

American tennis legend, Serena Williams, has inspired millions with her game. Over the years, the American achieved almost everything which was there. However, the 41-year-old wanted to make an impact apart from her game. Serena in her early career was not very vocal and focused solely on tennis.

However, with time, she kept adding laurels to her name. This made the legend realize her potential and responsibility towards society. Serena since posed for the cover of Vogue magazine. Later, she also spoke about the political message she wanted to deliver.

When Serena turned political

When Serena appeared on the cover page of Vogue magazine, she had a clear idea in her mind. The former world number one wanted to inspire more of her kind. Speaking about the idea behind shooting for the cover picture, the American said,

“Being black and being on the cover was really important to me. The success of one woman should be the inspiration to another, and I’m always trying to inspire and motivate the black girls out there. I’m not a model. I’m not the girl next door. But I’m not hiding. Actually, I look like a lot of women out there,” Serena said.

She further added, “The American woman is many women, and I think it’s important to speak to American women at a time when they need encouragement. I’m not political, but I think everyone is worried, to a degree.”

Serena chose Vogue magazine again when she decided to retire from tennis. This time, her daughter Olympia also was there with her in the cover picture.

When Serena Williams openly spoke about people judging her by looks

Serena Williams once accused people of judging her game face. The 23-time Grand Slam champion said that it was tough for her to get people to like her. Just because of her looks, people used to perceive that she must be a mean person. However, Serena claims that if they ask others on the tour, she must be one of the nicest people.

Further, the legend also gave an example of Maria Sharapova, who, according to her, speaks less and keeps her distance. However, people still perceive her to be nice and kind.

Making a bold statement, the tennis great claimed that African American, especially women, have to be twice as good to make people happy.
