Caroline Wozniacki took the world by storm when she announced her retirement in 2020. In her last match, the Danish champion lost in straight sets to Ons Jabeur. For a farewell, Wozniacki received a bittersweet tribute as the crowd sang ‘Sweet Caroline’ for her. Since then, she has become a mom to two kids. Little did we know we hadn’t seen the last of Wozniacki!

On one bright day in 2022, the former WTA No. 1 believed that she was ready to return to the professional tennis circuit. Wozniacki practiced throughout the year and announced her comeback through an interview with Vogue in June. The Canadian Open was her first tournament as a mom, and she played like she was never away from the professional game despite her motherly concerns.

It has been 3 years, and 8 months since Wozniacki played a game on the professional WTA circuit. The Dane suffered from an autoimmune disorder, which made it difficult for her to strike a work-life balance. She hung up her racket after her 2020 Australian Open run – at the same Slam she won in 2018.

With her imminent return, the tennis world has been buzzing. And boy, did she deliver! At the Rogers Cup, Wozniacki beat Kimberly Birrell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, and mesmerized the crowd. After her win, she talked about her kids and how she unwittingly kept tracking the time, as she was eager to get back to them. The Dane said, “Yeah, that’s pretty crazy. I was just looking at the clock, actually. I’m gonna still catch them after I do a little bit of treatment and food and stuff.”

Wozniacki will face Marketa Vondrousova, who beat Mayar Sherif in straight sets in her first round. The 10th-seed Wimbledon winner expressed her excitement to play the former WTA No. 1 after her win. The 24-year-old regarded Wozniacki as a great champion and stated that she did not look like she had been away from tennis for 3 years.

Vondrousova feels that the second round at Montreal would be a challenge for her and the 2-time US Open finalist. Fan support, however, seems to be tippling in favor of the latter. Wozniacki received a warm welcome as the crowd at Centre Court cheered for her first match post-comeback, while a display from the upper bowl read, ‘Bon Retour Caro’ in giant capitals.
