The French Open doubles turned out quite similar to the singles, as this marked the debut of two out of three players in the finals. Taylor Townsend and Leylah Fernandez played against Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula in the semi-finals. The 10th seed players demolished the 2nd seed duo in style and advanced to their first Grand Slam final. Starting the game with an unbelievable bagel, they defeated the American duo in straight sets (6-0 6-4). Taylor Townsend celebrated the win by ‘sprinkling’ joy and everything happy. This is her unique way of celebrating, and during the post-match conference, she was asked about the same.

Taylor Townsend-Leylah Fernandez duo adding flavor to the game

After their incredible triumph in the semifinal, the American player revealed that they sometimes have bland food and sprinkle ingredients themselves. She said, “..I’m like sprinkling a little salt, seasoning, just season the crowd, season the ball, the court, everything.”

The 27-year-old further explained, “So it’s just, you know, adding a little flavor, you know.” Fernandez also joined her by saying, “Add a little bit of spice,” to which Townsend replied, “Sugar, spice, everything nice. We’re Bubblegum Babies, no, Powerpuff Girls, whatever. However you want to spin it.”

The American-Canadian duo has been breezing past their opponents

This is not the first match between the duos. They faced each other in the Miami Open finals of 2023. On that occasion, Gauff-Pegula claimed the title, leaving the American-Canadian duo as the runner-up. Townsend-Fernandez got their revenge moment in the semi-finals of the Roland Garros doubles, and the duo was elated to compete in the finals. For Fernandez, this is her first Grand Slam final in doubles; while for Townsend, this is the second.

My journey as a sports writer could not have been more hyperbolic. Growing up, I buried myself in books and could not play any sport I wanted. So, I channeled my passion towards watching them extensively and imitating the players. My Master’s degree in Applied Psychology helped me understand the dynamics and thought processes of athletes. I enjoy watching the interviews of my favorite athletes as much as I enjoy their games. Gaining athletes’ perspectives helped me understand their gameplay better and why they chose a certain shot or made a specific decision. As an English literature and Journalism graduate, I tend to research extensively and store a lot of information that threatens to exhaust my memory. At ES, I have focused on writing elaborate perspectives, reporting interviews, controversial topics, and coresport news along with the occasional pop culture article. Movies, series, fiction, food, music, and painting are a few of the many things that keep my sanity in check. I highly anticipate current-generation tennis champions to spice the game up and create more on-court rivalries. I hope Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek, Jannik Sinner, Taylor Fritz, and Carlos Alcaraz achieve their best and carve a place for themselves among the tennis legends.
