Martina Navratilova has never been shy about expressing her opinions on even the most unpopular topics. Recently, Navratilova took to her Twitter account to talk about the Academy Awards while all her fans were busy celebrating the winners. Navratilova highlighted a lesser-engaged topic and posted a New York Times Opinion article to make her point loud and clear. And this time the topic is- the representation of different genders in the Academy Awards.

In today’s world, gender identity is a fluid concept. Non-binary creators are making their mark beside the hetero-normative genders. In such times, only having hetero-normative gender specific nomination categories for two pairs of awards is really not fair, according to the 59-time Grand Slam champion. The issue was recently highlighted by a New York Times Opinion piece and now WTA legend Navratilova adds her voice to the debate.

Martina Navratilova doesn’t care about the patriarchy

In response to an article by The New York Times Opinion section, which questioned why acting awards are still split by gender, Navratilova tweeted: “yeah. Nope, not yet… not now. #fuckthepatriarchy.”

As the article aligns its sentiments with Navratilova’s line of thought, awards should be based on performance and not solely on gender. And if it is based on gender after all, then it should be the case with all awards. The situation is trickier than it looks because non-binary and genderfluid creators and artists might not feel comfortable in a category that is only men or only women.
